Invisible braces at the inner side of the teeth: Lingual technology at our Munich practice

Lingual technology uses brackets that are placed on the inner side of the teeth, out of sight. What are the advantages and downsides of this method? On this page, you can read up on the treatment procedure with lingual systems, such as incognito™, at our practice in Munich.

Broad range of treatments

As a rule, nearly all teeth can be treated using lingual technology. This opens up a range of treatment options that cover just as many opportunities as conventional, fixed braces. Lingual technology is usually more elaborate and costly. This means that it pays off primarily with certain indications. Whether it is the right treatment for you, is best decided after an in-depth assessment. Of course, we will also present you with various alternatives to offer you a comprehensive overview of the treatment options.

What is the treatment procedure?

Lingual braces are quite complicated to manufacture. It also costs more effort to put the brackets into place and change the arches than with conventional multi-band braces. First, we take impressions of your teeth and perform a 3D scan. This allows us to design the instruments precisely on the computer. These data are used to produce a model and the associated brackets at our in-house dental technology laboratory. To begin with, a wax model of the brackets isproduced using a 3D printer. This model is then embedded in plaster, after which it is cast with a gold-containing alloy. The resulting model is unique and tailored to your teeth.

We gently attach the brackets to the inside of your teeth after a processing time of three weeks, connecting them to an arch that is customised to your dental situation. A wire-bending robot ensures that the wire fits exactly, correcting your teeth as desired.

We regularly adjust the alignment of the arch to straighten your teeth step by step. How long you have to wear your lingual braces depends on your dental and jaw positioning. Of course, we will gladly explain the exact procedure to you during an extensive consulting session.

Teeth tend to start moving again after they have been corrected. We offer so-called retainers (LINK) at our dental practice in Munich to make sure that the resulting realignment is permanent. The small wires ensure that your teeth will stay straight in future.

Benefits and downsides

The benefits of lingual technology include:

  • invisible braces;
  • no white spots on the outside of the teeth, which might form with conventional braces;
  • permanent fixing without the risk of forgetting the braces in the morning, which in turn leads to faster treatment results than removeable braces;
  • lower risk of caries than with other fixed braces.
  • We will gladly explain the various benefits and downsides of lingual technology during a personal consultation.

Brackets that are located on the inner side of the teeth tend to negatively influence pronunciation over the first few weeks. There might also be some issues with eating. After the adaptation phase, these side-effects tend to disappear again. Most patients stop noticing the brackets at this point. Hard foods such as bread crusts and nuts should, however, be avoided until the treatment is completed.

The brackets on the inside of the teeth are harder to clean, which means that very good dental hygiene is necessary to avoid increased risk of caries. The foundation for healthy teeth is based on regular brushing and flossing. We are happy to explain what you need to do; your dental hygiene is paramount to us!

Does my insurance cover the costs?

Treatments with lingual technology are more comprehensive than with other braces. This also results in higher costs. Statutory health insurance providers only rarely cover the costs for adults. People with private insurance should ask their insurance company about the policy. Private health insurance providers sometimes reimburse all costs, sometimes only in part, and sometimes not at all.
